The OpenVPN Connect app is a client application that allows users to securely access a VPN server using the OpenVPN protocol. It does not provide its own VPN service, but rather acts as a transport for data over an encrypted secure tunnel via the internet. This allows for secure remote access, zero trust network access, and protection for SaaS apps and IoT communications.
OpenVPN Connect is the only VPN client developed and maintained by OpenVPN Inc. It can be used with their business solutions, such as OpenVPN Cloud and OpenVPN Access Server, for various secure networking needs. OpenVPN Cloud is a cloud-delivered service that integrates virtual networking with essential secure access service edge capabilities, while OpenVPN Access Server is a self-hosted VPN solution for remote access and site-to-site networking.
OpenVPN Cloud can be accessed from over 30 worldwide locations and uses patent-pending technologies to create a full-mesh network topology for improved performance and routing. It also allows for easy access to private applications hosted on multiple connected networks simply by using the application name. On the other hand, OpenVPN Access Server provides granular access control and supports various user authentication methods, including SAML, RADIUS, LDAP, and PAM.
In addition to these business solutions, OpenVPN Connect can also be used to connect to any server or service that is compatible with the OpenVPN protocol or running the open source Community edition. To use OpenVPN Connect, users must import a "connection profile" file, which can be in the form of a .ovpn file or a website URL. This file or URL, along with user credentials, is provided by the VPN service administrator.
